Chyulu Hills National Park Kenya

The Chyulu hills national park stacked in Makueni county about 200km south east of Nairobi-Kenya between the famous Amboseli and Tsavo ecosystems is prominent for its Leviathan cave (11.15km long), the deepest known lava tube caves in Africa and one of the longest in the world. The park is proudly praised for its ecosystem composed of thicket and green grassland on the lower parts, while above roughly 1800metres dominated by montane forest, all of which is filled with a variety of species of birds, mammals and boast some of the spectacular views of mountain Kilimanjaro.

Chyulu hills in Kenya cover an area of 120km2 with its highest peak worth 2188metres high. The verdant rolling hills of endless green, great blue skies and spectacular landscape views of Chyulu hills a rugged wilderness still shows signs of volcanic origins since the Shaitani and Chainu eruptions that occurred in 1856. A visit to the Chyulu hills can be conducted year through, though it is best for wildlife fans to visit in the dry months of October, January to February. The hills feature charming features that range from fascinating volcanic scenery, caves, mammals most notably the big five, luxurious vegetation not forgetting the bird watchers’ paradise of Lake Jipe which lies in the south-west corner of the Park.

The Leviathan cave and hiking

The Leviathan cave and hiking; Leviathan is one of the world’s longest caves approximately 11.15km. the cave is divided into two segments of   9.15km and 2.0km. The hike through the stunning land scape with views of the magnificent mountain Kilimanjaro. The volcanic mountains provide a mesmerizing mingling of cones and lava flow. The magnificent rocks also show evidence of the volcanic cause of the mountains. Below the hills is a home of mostly unexplored caves, swamps and Jipe lake. A hike to the Leviathan cave is worth visiting.

Wildlife and bird watching Chyulu Hills National Park

Wildlife and birdwatching; Animal densities in this park are quiet low due to heavy poaching by the communities, however wild animals that can be spotted within this park include the eland, klipspringer, giraffe, zebra, baboon and sykey`s monkeys, antelopes, cheetah, wildebeest, steenbok and reedbucks. Nevertheless, the big game like the elephants, lions, leopards and buffaloes and black rhinos can also be spotted traversing from Tsavo west to Amboseli.

The park is also home to a 350 species of birdlife with some endemic races like Francolinus, shelleyipogonocichla, stellata, zoothera gurneyibradypterus cinnamomeus, Hieraaetus, ayresii, Stephanoaetus coronatuspolemaetus bellicosus and Cinnyricinclus femoralis, among others.

An excellent bird watching site is along Lake Jipe in the south-west corner of the park. The lake is fed by run-off from Kilimanjaro and the north pare mountains. It is bordered by large permanent swamps at its eastern and western ends.
