Many Anthropologists still believe in East Africa to be the Cradle of mankind and this claim is justified by many archeological sites in Kenya.

The many sites of Kenya represent various levels of development and evolution of early man. The Kenyan sites of Kenya are so dramatic as anywhere else in Africa although the Olduvai Gorge of Tanzania is more famous.

Was it in East Africa or Southern Africa? The question is still debated but what is important is that Kenya is on the list of African countries where the first stirrings of mankind could have happened.

The Leakey Family in Kenya

The Leakey Family in Kenya; The Leakey family is more attached to the anthropological archeology of East Africa. Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey initialized much of the archeological work that is still ongoing. Louis Leaky is famously known as the man who managed to convince other scientists that the cradle of mankind is in Africa and that mankind must have evolved from Africa. Leakey and his wife Mary are known to have discovered many archeological sites and their work has been continued by their son Richard Leakey.

Some of the best known prehistorical sites that are found in Kenya include;

Hyrax Hill – this is one of the important Neolithic excavation sites in Kenya located near Nakuru town. This prehistorical site dates far back from 1500 B.C. The Hyrax Hill was discovered by Louis and Mary Leakey with a fortress and many tombs found here in 1926.

Koobi Fora – this site sheds light about the evolution of man over last 4.2 million years as a source of hominin fossils. The non-humanoid fossils exceed the humanoid fossils by giving a more detailed look at the flora and fauna dating far back in the Miocene era.

Pate Island- located in the North coast of Kenya is another historical site where human activities of the 7th century had been found, the chines pottery that was found in this site prove that the Chinese started trading in Africa many centuries back.

Kariandusi adjacent to Lake Elementaita – this is a site where in 1928 the hand-axe man was discovered. The lake levels increased and moved the prehistoric men from their homes along the shores of the lake into the lake together with their tools and weapons that were found in water.
