Amboseli National Park is located in Kajiado county, south of Kenya at the boarder of Tanzania. The park covers an area of 151 square miles at a distance of about 3- 4hrs drive from Nairobi in the south eastern direction. Approximately 240 Km. Amboseli in Maa local language of the Maasai means a place of dust was originally occupied by hunters and later the Chagga and Kamba and finally the Maasai pastoralists arrived from the north. It started as a natural reserve in 1968 and was declared a national park in 1991. In 1991, UNESCO declared Amboseli a biosphere reserve to conserve its exclusive ecosystem.
Amboseli National Park is next to Maasai Mara in popularity in Kenya, it is located at the base of Mountain Kilimanjaro (5895m)-Africa`s highest mountain and the park is also home vast herds of elephants that graze from the greater swamps of Longinye and Enkongo Narok to the dusty plains. Amboseli National park is among the best wildlife safari destinations in the world. The park is small in size but offering one of the most outstanding wildlife safari experiences. Amboseli national park features a variety landscapes including; acacia woods, open grasslands, marshland, scrub steppe and swamps.
These rolling hills and savannas are home to vast herds of elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, and many species of herbivores like wildebeests, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, Burchell’s, Masai giraffes in acacia trees of the park, impalas in the savanna plains and so much more. Even many other species of birds of over 420-making Amboseli another paradise for birders with rare species like Kori bustard, flocks of grey crowned cranes and many other species of up to 420 bird species all in Amboseli national park.
